However, while we were exporting our best fruits, China was doing something far more strategic: learn.

Today, the Asian giant has gone from being the main buyer to becoming a formidable competitor. The article «"From student to teacher"», written by Sebastian Valdez Lutz For VISION MAGAZINE, he details this fascinating (and challenging) process of agricultural reconversion.

Below, we present the key points of this analysis and how it directly affects the plum and other fruit industries.

The Chinese Method: Substitution

China's strength lay not in building from scratch, but in learning quickly from those who were already doing it well. Its development pattern follows very defined steps:

Initial opening: It opens its doors to imported products.

Knowledge absorption: It allows the entry of genetics, technology and know-how.

Focused development: It focuses learning in specific territories with government support.

Infrastructure and scale: Build processing capacity, cold chain logistics, and local brands.

Global projection: It uses its huge domestic market to finance the scale and eventually begins to export.

The Case of the "Xin Mei" Plum: A Warning for the Sector

For the plum industry, the most revealing example is that of the variety Xin Mei.

In 2005, Jiashi County (Xinjiang Region) introduced three foreign varieties of European-type plum trees. In just five years, these were approved and adopted as "local varieties." With strong government investment in research, packaging, refrigeration, and marketing, the results were astounding:

Explosive growth: From 1,600 hectares planted in 2010 to approximately 40,000 hectares projected for 2025.

Global leadership: With an estimated production of 460,000 tons of fresh fruit, China is positioned as the world's largest producer of European-type plums.

Beyond Plums: Blueberries, Grapes and Walnuts

The pattern is repeated in other species where Latin America had a clear dominance:

Blueberries: In 2021, China became the world's largest producer (70,000 hectares) and has already begun its export phase.

Table grapes: It is projected that by 2025/26 China will equal Peru as the world's leading exporter, exceeding 15 million tons of production.

Walnuts: From being a market with an oversupply of low quality, today they are approaching 550 thousand tons of exports, competing head-to-head with California.

What does this mean for Latin America?

If a good student is one who invests resources, absorbs knowledge, and then applies it to add value, then China is the best in the class.

The message for Latin American agribusiness is clear: Competitive advantage can no longer depend solely on the weather or arriving first. When China surpasses its mentors, it becomes a fierce and borderless competitor. It's time to rethink strategies, commit to exceptional quality, innovation, and product differentiation.

Delve deeper into the analysis

We invite you to read the full analysis of Sebastian Valdez Lutz, where the geopolitical and economic impact of these agricultural policies is detailed.

📥 Download Full PDF: From Student to Teacher (VISION MAGAZINE)

Discover how China went from being an importer to a leading agricultural exporter of plums, blueberries, and walnuts.
